October 2012 update: Woodbine Subway Station Improvements
May 29, 2012
The TTC plans to add accessibility improvements to both the Coxwell and Woodbine stations on the Bloor-Danforth subway line. At Coxwell, new elevators will make it easier to get to subway platforms and the concourse level, fare gates will be made accessible and automatic sliding doors will accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. The bus loop will also be repaved. Construction on Coxwell is expected to start late this year, and be completed by 2014.
An open house was held in March, 2012, to explain the Coxwell project to neighbours and transit users. The TTC got advice from the community on re-routing the buses and managing the construction process with as little disruption as possible. Another community meeting will be held in the fall to discuss construction and other implementation issues.
At Woodbine, new second exits will be added from the platform level to the street level. A new second exit building — on the northwest corner of Woodbine Avenue and Strathmore Boulevard — will be located diagonally across from the existing station. Woodbine station will also get new elevators from the main station entrance to the platform. Other improvements include signage incorporating barrier-free standards, replacement of interior ceilings and lighting, repair of exterior glazing and fascia adjacent to the new elevator structure, rehabilitation of the interior stairs, new wall and floor finishes in specific areas and bus platform paving. Additional landscaping will be planted along Strathmore Boulevard adjacent to the bus area and on the west side of the second-exit building.
Construction of the Woodbine station improvements is expected to begin in 2013 and finish in 2015. Councillor Davis has asked the TTC to hold an information meeting for neighbours and transit users before work begins on the station.
